Riad Medina Azahara Hostel

EXPLORE THE ENCHANTING CITY OF MARRAKESH, MOROCCO

By Diana Edelman

Marrakesh. A city that intoxicates travelers with every winding turn in the medina. It’s easy to get lost in a city that whirls with excitement and electricity. It’s easy to get lost through the narrow streets where pedestrians share space with donkeys hauling carts, bicyclists, motor bikes and cars … along with the souk owners who frequently step into one’s path to share their wares.   It’s also easy to find a place to stay. Walking through the main square, hotel owners descend, quick to offer lodging to the bright-eyed traveler entranced with the vibrant environment. Lodging options range from budget hostels to pricey riads and four-star deluxe accommodations.  For the traveler counting their cash, Riad Medina Azahara is an inexpensive and gorgeous option. Nestled down a side street a quick walk from the square, this riad is ideal for backpackers looking to capture the spirit of the city without breaking the bank. Options for rooms include dorms, doubles, triples and privates.

Every morning, breakfast is served on the large terrace in the center of the riad. Guest are treated to fresh bread, jam and the staple of Moroccan drinks – the sweet mint tea served piping hot and to the brim with mint leaves.  After breakfast, hostel guests can soak in the plunge pool or lounge on one of the comfortable couches under palm trees. The riad can set travelers up with tours, including the popular overnight camel tour in the desert, along with trips to waterfalls and more. The riad even comes equipped with a shisha pipe and flavors to puff while soaking up the call to prayer from the gorgeous rooftop deck. Hungry? Guests can order lunch and dinner from the riad and enjoy traditional Moroccan dishes poolside.

Because of the location, it is easy for travelers to head off and explore Marrakesh on foot. Take a walk to Djemaa el Fna, the main square where orange juice vendors, snake charmers and food stalls (at night) are abundant. Or, wander through the twisting medina. Nearby is El Bahia Palace that cost only a few dh to enter. There’s also museums, mosques and more that can entertain ... all within walking distance.  Riad Medina Azahara is a gorgeous sight at night. As the sun sets and the call to prayer echoes throughout the medina, sit on one of the couches with other travelers and take in the mesmerizing voices.
