AN ERA FOR THE AGES

By Jenna Wittenberg

Been looking for a reason to dust off you poodle skirt or leg warmers and put the needle back on the old LP? Then you’re in luck. For three days New Zealand will roll back the hands of time and play host to the inaugural RetroFest. RetroFest will pay homage to anything and everything rock and pop culture of the 50’s through the 80’s. If cars are your thing, or maybe music, RetroFest will satisfy the tastes of any retro lover. From March 9th to the 11th NZ National Fieldays Society, the developer of RetroFest, will hold a postmodern revival of the era’s best.

Bands representing the best of the 50’s to the 80’s will provide the live music at the festival. Acts like the Village People, 10cc and Gerry and the Pacemakers will be headlining while tribute bands will help keep the hits of the era rolling all weekend long.

If hot rods are what get your motor running you can stop by the classic cars and motorbikes showcase. If you prefer a different type of four wheels the campground will offer, what I can only hope is a disco, roller rink.

A dance hall well set the stage for a dance competition. Other competitions will include fashion, look-alike and talent.

Work out your vocal chords belting songs from Grease while riding the Ferris wheel and other amusement rides at the carnival. Even more exciting than the carnival is the chance to dust of your Atari and Pac-Man skills while playing the retro arcade games.

The ongoing marketplace will offer a great place to get your hands on some retro handcrafted items, clothes, food and memorabilia.

So bring your tent and sleeping bag to campout right on site becuase the unique kiwi-retro atmosphere is sure to bring a twist (and shout) to the postmodern revival of the 50’s and 80’s.
